FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWIST OUT CANCER RETURNS HOME TO CHICAGO
ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3 AFTER INAUGURAL EVENTS
WERE RECENTLY HELD IN TEL AVIV AND MONTREAL
Brushes With Cancer matches those touched by cancer with artists
to create a unique piece of artwork that reflects on their journey with cancer
August 1, 2018, Chicago – Twist Out Cancer, an international non-profit charitable organization that provides psychosocial support to individuals touched by cancer through creative arts programming, announced today that tickets are now on sale for its signature program, Brushes With Cancer, which will return to Chicago on Saturday, November 3, at 7 p.m. The sixth annual art exhibition and gala will be held at Chez, located at 247 E. Ontario. Brushes With Cancer matches those touched by cancer with artists to create a unique piece of artwork that reflects on their journey with cancer. This unique celebration of survivorship and hope pairs previvors, survivors, and caregivers (referred to as Inspirations) with talented artists working in a variety of mediums. Those touched by cancer share their ‘twist on cancer’ – stories, feelings and experiences – with the artist, which serves as the Inspiration for the art.
“Over the last six years, Brushes with Cancer has grown from a local Chicago-based art program into an international movement as we were recently able to bring this transformative program to Tel Aviv and Montreal. These two diverse cities not only indicated a need for psychosocial services, but they also provided a vibrant and eclectic artistic community that stood up to the challenge,” said Jenna Benn Shersher, the founder and executive director of Twist Out Cancer. “We are so excited to bring Brushes With Cancer back to Chicago, where we have been able to create unexpected intersections between individuals touched by cancer and artists thanks to the generosity of the Chicago community.”
The keynote speaker for this year’s gala is Nancy Borowick, a world renowned photographer and author who recently published “The Family Imprint,” which explores her parent's intimate journey as they underwent parallel treatments for stage-four cancer. Nancy is a regular contributor to the New York Times, CNN, Time Magazine, and the Washington Post. Food will be provided throughout the evening by RPM Italian, Sushi San, Lifeway Foods, and Kitchfix, with alcohol provided by the Lagunitas Brewing Company, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Davos Brands. Guests will also be treated to the music of David Da Costa, a Spanish guitar player who is a French native of Portuguese and Spanish descent.
General admission tickets are $150 and includes dinner, drinks, and the full program. Those that purchase VIP tickets for $200 will also have access to a private reception and a VIP lounge. The program starts at 7 p.m., but VIP ticket holders can enter starting at 6 p.m. Tickets and more information is available at www.brusheswithcancerchicago.com.
While Brushes With Cancer is the signature program of Twist Out Cancer, it is just one part of the overall experience. On Sunday, September 16, current and past Inspirations have been invited to an art therapy session that allows cancer participants to indulge in relaxed and mindful art making that encourages self-awareness into their personal experience with cancer. Art therapy deepens their connection to the part of themselves that may have been repressed or silenced in the day-to-day experiences of battling cancer or caring for a loved one. It will be led by Jacqueline Carmody, LCPC, ATR-BC, who is an art therapist on the Board of Directors for Twist Out Cancer.
