Survivor - Stage 3 breast cancer
Twist on Cancer: My twist on cancer is turning a horrible, scary situation into one of growth, strength and renewal. During my journey, I was alone but had my family visit and support me. So grateful for them. Having my dog to get me moving and keeping me company helped as well. I started my days journaling and praying and so thankful for my faith in God to help me get through it.
After my diagnosis in 2022, my life turned upside down. I was in a city by myself trying to rebuild my life, and now having to do this fight on my own. But I was not completely alone. Family flew in for surgeries and I had a lot of support from afar, as well as from friends nearby. My faith in God has helped me get through each day. I just had to focus on one step at a time. The growth I have done mentally has prepared me to take on new challenges. Finding my new normal and getting back to work is where I am now in my journey. I want to share my experience and help those just starting their cancer journey.

Artist Statement: “In the Arms of St. Malo” is about hope, resilience, finding peace, and building community. Annemarie is a strong individual who wants only to help other people and bring them comfort. She finds peace in nature, in the mountains, and in her faith. When talking with Annemarie, I was moved by her positive outlook and unbroken spirit. I approached this piece without preconceptions, taking tidbits of my conversations with Annemarie and using them as guidelines for my brushstrokes and color choices. I took this opportunity to paint an abstract portrait of Annemarie. The bright colors abound “In the Arms of St. Malo” reflect her joy and spirit. The darker areas are representative of the solemnity, reverence, and weight of faith and family. At the end of the day, we are all bright and dark, moving and still, complicated individuals just trying to find peace, happiness, and love. I want people to look at this piece and see a bit of Annemarie, a bit of themselves, and let their imaginations run wild.
