Survivor
Twist on Cancer: I never was one to talk about my cancer story. Maybe I didn’t like people feeling bad for me or the look on their face when I told them. I didn’t like being called a warrior! I just wanted to be a kid. I was 7 years old when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I was part of a wonderful organization as a child called “Kids Kicking Cancer,” I will always remember how my sensei taught me to “breathe in the light, push out the darkness.” It helped me when I felt sick during my treatment to feel in control of my body and mind. I've been able to apply that to many stressful situations in my life since then. What I’ve realized is that the pain people experience can be manifested in many different ways, some good and some bad. I have to believe that we can transform our experiences in life into meaningful and productive things, much like this program! It was so nice to connect with Lena and be able to express these tucked away memories: my gratitude, my pain, and my survivor’s guilt. Now, at the age of 23, I can finally let down those walls and tell you I am a cancer survivor and I am excited for the future.

Artist Statement: “Yamato” means “great harmony“ and I believe that this is what we all seek. Getting to know my Inspiration, Elena, was a process of also getting to know her past, maybe even a part of her inner child that might still be hurt. We all have the challenge in our life to balance out certain aspects in our life, whether it is our inner child and our grown-up self, our moments of happiness and sadness, or how the past affects us now. Everything is always in a flow and changing, but all we want is probably peace and harmony with the world and ourselves. Elena’s experience inspired me to deal with certain issues of balance and harmony, as well and to transform them into art.
