The Story

Survivor
Twist on Cancer: The day after my 30th birthday, I shaved my head and rode a convertible top-down. It was nice to not have hair getting stuck in my lip gloss. Facing mortality is a warning, and it is the road less traveled. I’ve learned to trust the processes and people who encourage me to heal and flourish, and honor who I am now. I appreciate Twist Out Cancer for highlighting a young survivor’s experience!

Artist Statement: Kelsey is a bright, shining light. She has endured this cancer journey with unending positivity and perseverance. She inspires me with her colorful lifestyle and uplifting musical tastes. She is a beautiful soul. Kelsey is always so thoughtful and giving of herself, like being a caregiver for her grandfather. I will be forever grateful for having met her. She has many spirit animals and loves all life on Earth, but I chose her favorite, the sea turtle swimming in the sunlit blue waters. Our shared sign, Aquarius the water bearer made of copper pours the life-giving liquid into the clear blue sea. The pine cone represents the pineal gland in the brain where we connect with the spiritual realms and find healing. The butterfly represents transformation. Nothing of the caterpillar remains in the butterfly. The poem speaks of our lifelong struggle with darkness which inevitably arrives, but our armor must always be love.
