Artist Statement: This image was born within the emotional bravery and personal creativity that Nikki conveyed when telling her story, which was strongly rooted in history and optimism. Her smiling eyes felt like a portal to her heart, and the light they carry features so prominently in the beauty of her, that I wanted to highlight them in this work. Nikki's story felt like new growth from deep, strong roots, and the fruits she loves represented here, speak of the ripe blooming that I saw of her personhood, as her gift, as Nikki.
