The Story
Shawn Williams

Breast cancer survivor
Twist on cancer: I am a 20 year survivor of ovarian cancer and a 7 year survivor of breast cancer. Cancer teaches the gift of vulnerability and an appreciation of the present moment. It provides an awareness of inner strength. It also provides an awareness that everyone is doing what they have the capacity to do at that moment in time.

Artist Statement: The title of my piece is “Poet Tree”. My Inspiration, Shawn Williams, grew up in a small town in Tennessee. One of her favorite pastimes was reading poetry under a large oak on a hill, with the earth beneath her, and the breeze sweeping by. Many of our talks were about books, favorite authors, and philosophy. I chose to use these ideas to create bookends with a natural shape that frame the tree Shawn sat under.

Shawn has been an incredible inspiration in so many ways. As a survivor of melanoma, ovarian, and breast cancer, her ability to emanate kindness and gratitude is insurmountable. I've thoroughly enjoyed learning her story, sharing thoughts on ideology together, and remembering to be mindful, grateful, and forever growing into our best selves.
